Founded by Francisco De Montejo on January 6th, 1542 and built over the ruins of the ancient Mayan city of T'ho; Mérida is the capital of Yucatán and one of the most important and culturally diverse cities of Mexico.

Recently Mérida was designated as American Capital of Culture by the Organization of the American States--the first time that a city in one of the 35 countries in the Americas received this designation. This colonial city has a lot to offer to its visitors and it is the ideal starting point to explore THE MAYAN WORLD. Renowned archaeological sites such as Chichen Itza (NEWLY SELECTED AS ONE OF THE NEW 7 WONDERS OF THE WORLD), Uxmal, Kabah, Labna, Sayil and Xlapak, are just a few minutes away. From here you can also visit many former henequen haciendas, coastal ecological reserves and other places of natural beauty. All of this combined with Yucatan's own folklore, rhythmic music, friendly people, dances and a varied gastronomy make of this city a great place to enjoy and explore.
